Analogous AND complementary?

I was inspired by some green/orange combos and pink/red combos I've seen on blogs lately. Yes, I, too, sadly learned The Rule about putting analogous colours together and was warned away from complementary colour pairings, hence, the Fun Rule-Breaking Day, featuring one of my favourite vests. Here I am in: orange and red PLUS green and red PLUS blue and green. Yummy and naughty. I found a slightly brighter place to take today's pic which shows all the marvellous colours. I hope you like it! This outfit puts a spring in my step.

Details:

  • vintage vest - orange and green paisley, in an alien poly fabric (which I adore), worn inside out (you can see the darts) and belted with an embroidered '70s belt because the vest is much, much too large for me
  • re-gifted silk blouse, also much too large, but I'm into that
  • D&G red velvet pants, thrifted of course, and thrifted D&G shoes, love those high-waters!

  1. I'm loving the combination of ...EVERYTHING, including the location!! It's bewildering, like, are you on a basketball court, a squash court? Clearly I'm not a sports gal. I really, really love the positioning of the belt, as it pulls it all together for me. There's also an element in this outfit that makes me think of the steppes of Mongolia (if they have steppes there). I like it.

  2. Oh Jean, so happy you made it here successfully! Such a great comment too! Yes, I thought of the steppes for this outfit as well - I think it has something to do with the vest and hat? That's a squash court and I have to clean my shoes thoroughly and tip-toe into position near the door.

  4. Oh Mélanie!i love this! I might use it for the feature
Good god i wish i was a bigger in the blogger's world!
People could see how brilliant you are at mixing and styling!

I just realize that you are the culture serf, what great addition to your blog i will mention it, you have the eye!
I used to do that as well. Taking pics of people in Montreal
Are people in Vancouver willing to have their pic taken? Do you have lots of no nos?

    1. I am not surprised that you liked photographing others too. A passion is a passion. I'd say that about 15% of people say no no! Was it like that in Montreal? People I stop often say I should go to Montreal; of all cities in Canada, that is the only other place I would live. Your comments are incredibly humbling because you inspired me to blog in the first place! And your outfits continue to inspire - merci, merci, mon ami! I am happy for your magazine coverage!!!

  6. Oh, I needed to meet you months ago. I had a vest in a very similar pattern...but returned it to the thrifts, never worn on the blog. You also make me think I wasn't crazy for learning the rule against pink & orange, or pink & red. I thought for days about where I'd come up with that. I think you might be of a similar mindset to Paula at Fashion over Fifty, if the two of you haven't met yet.

    1. So sad to hear about your returned vest, but a good excuse to run out and get more! I think we learn the rules as girls by osmosis. I'm seeing Prada designs this spring with black lace over fabric that I'm sure are breaking rules, and Gucci clothes like wallpaper - it's a free-for-all. Yippee! (But I like hunting down my clothes, not catching them in a zoo.) I must nip out for a peek at Paula. Thanks. You also introduced me to sweet Bella.

  9. Beautiful dressings, beautiful art!! So happy I found your blog today. Coincidentally I discovered another artist I really like last year, his name is Milt Kobayashi. Not sure if you're aware of his work but I'm betting you'd love it!
Looking forward to more of your great posts!

  10. Hi Joni. Thanks for much for your comment! I checked out Milt, and then I checked out others there, and so on. I could be sucked in all day... Your calligraphy is grand! I love it.

  12. Such wonderful colours Melanie! I am definitely getting braver (like one has to be "brave" about clothes...) about mixing/clashing colours and prints as I was brought up with all the rules about pattern-with-plain and so-called complimentary colours. I still have a slight tendency to the matchy-match, but I'm working on it!
I'm going to experiment with the high-waist belt idea, but I'm a bit big in the boob department, so I'm not sure how it'll look. Can but try!
