Hat Attack 20

There's nothing like a glam photo shoot to escape reality for just a little while. I am calmed by the process of secretly piling my beauty products around me on the floor of my room, sitting cross-legged as I sort through them, humming, hauling out my floor lights, clipping up the white curtain. O is not allowed. My excuse this time was Judith's Hat Attack 20 at Style Crone.

I call this hat the acorn hat or Hershey's Kiss hat, vintage now but purchased new yonks ago in Kyoto. I wear it out once in a while but the wool makes my forehead itchy. I could wear a scarf underneath but I am so grabby-last-minute when I go out the door I never remember.

Unfortunately my shoot was cut short by a shower of bugs from my light when it tipped over, an assortment of desiccated baby moths, larvae shells, and a ladybug. I shall have stern words with my housekeeper, perhaps cut her pay or worse (oh yes, please fire me!). I carefully stuck the critters onto clear tape so O could examine them properly under his trinocular for signs of danger bugs (bed bugs, termites, silverfish). There were none. Whew. That calls for a raise (yeah, right, talk, talk, talk...).

So now that I've ruined the glamour vibe of the photos with this bug tale, I'll shut up soon. I wore cycling pants and my number sweater, which I haven't yet wrecked up properly. That's a hardware store heavy silver chain and clear beads I found in our garbage room around my neck. "Oooh, please, stop with all the glamour, Mel! I can't take any more!!" Okay, now I'll shut up.

  1. SO poetic make up. And I agree. Glam photos are/is (gah!) a great way to escape reality. Sweden this time a year when the snow starts to melt and all the Brown mud will appear is/are (gah!) so sad that filters is/are (gah!) your best friend.

  2. You look so beautiful in these photos, your eyeliner is magical with your acorn hat, you look fabulously exotic.
Silver fish? Dangerous? I thought they only liked clean places so having them was a good sign. Better reassess my housekeeping! x

  3. Great pictures! I love the eyeliner with the hat. Could you line the hat with something that won't make your forehead itch?
I'm considering firing my housekeeper, too. She just sits and watches Netflix all day.

  4. What do silverfish do? Eeek! I sometimes find those in the basement. I HATE those. Almost as much as...but not quite...centipedes which I truly HATE HATE HATE. The transparent ones are the WORST. Like an invisible monster.

Okay...you've freaked me right out now! LOL

Love the Hershey Kiss hat and the gorgeous make-up which makes you look even more elfin like.

    bisous

  6. You did a great job with your eyes you artist you. And I really love that sweater.
I have a trick I do for wool hats because they make me terrible itchy. Even just regular acrylic yarn can bother me. So you know that artists hinge tape that comes in a roll for framing prints? It's white and thin cotton like? Well, I just run that stuff along the inside of the hat where it touches my head and it works great. It stays on nearly forever too. I should repackage it and get a patent for that! YOu can think of a name for it and we'll split the profit.

  9. Ooh, loving that eyeliner! So very glam, dahling! Ugh, bugs in lights...so gross. Thank you for the morning imagery while I eat my bowl of bugs, I mean, oatmeal!

  10. Such an interest story...it's like reading the blurbs of news that come up with your email or those newspapers alongside the cashier's line at the grocers. But so much more relevant and relate-able. Kudos to you for glamor shots. I have none left in me. Did I ever?

  11. Hershey's kisses and bugs. Sounds like my pantry. Although I have never opened my cupboard door to see anything as beautiful as you. Wool is so itchy. You have a point. Wink wink.

  12. Such an adorable acorn hat - it goes so well with your make-up! Vix is right - you look so exotic, almost like from a different planet. I admire Joni's solution - I am very much for multitasking and multi-purposing!

Love the bug story within the glam story, that's a wonderful storytelling, Mel! Oh the joys of housekeeping... Like Bobbi, I fired my housekeeper ages ago. Now she blogs! xxx

  13. Our building manager calls pest control if people have silverfish and I don't want those guys in my home. Apparently silverfish eat cotton and books and other things, not so much people.

I thought of lining the hat too, Bobbi. Joni's tape solution sounds right, no sewing or gluing required! Can I line my pants with that too?

I think we have all hired the same housekeeper. And fired her!

  14. HIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!! Sorry I haven't been around in forever!!! I'm taking some time today to catch up on your blog. Half the people in my reading list don't even post anymore--I don't know who I'm following, who's new, or what's going on. I want to reconnect with my old Blogger buddies and this community. I wish I would win the lottery and then I wouldn't have to have a day job, which takes up soooo much time, and then I could spend all my time working on my novel, taking pictures, and blogging! Dream life! You look amazing as always!

  16. I must have that hat (or one like it). Thinking I'll give the eye makeup a try soon - I need to feel as fab as you look!

  17. Ooh someone's been let loose in the makeup tent again!
You will not believe the hat I just posted. My latest knitted creation is the same shape as your hat.
I love the tale of the bugs and how you SAVED them for later examination. BTW trinocular is an awfully cool sounding thing! Do you look with three eyes?
You look very differeent in this getup, but I can't figure out why. It might be the hat being down on you forehead? It would itch me too. I can only wear wool in the cold.
Anyway, I'll stop talking now too! xo Jazzy Jack

  18. I am honored that Hat Attack was your excuse for this glam photo shoot. Your creativity knows no bounds. I love the shape of the acorn hat, which is accentuated by your makeup and brings out the beauty of your eyes. There is now way that you can ruing the glamour vibe of this photo, even with bugs.

Thank you Mel, for sharing your magnificence with Hat Attack!

  20. You look brilliant! That hat really suits you.

    Have a wonderful weekend! ♥

  21. You're right, Greetje. This is only a tiny me that I let out from time to time. I never let her stay long because I can't WAIT to wash my face.

  23. Very glamorous eyeliner, Mel, and an acorn as headwear is always a top choice!
Dangerous bugs? Probably got a house full, but we're surviving... xxx

  24. Still on your eyeliner kick, I see. I suppose you have to use it up. It makes your eyes look huge! The hat is very cool, as are the coral lips and the glamorous, pensive pose. I'm sure the bugs died happy if they were watching you take photos!

  25. My laptop was particularly slow in loading this page just now - which meant that first there was only the acorn (like a game of visual slow-reveal 'What is it….?') and then, hat plus your eyes for a few frozen moments, until the rest of the photo unfurled.
It seemed a fitting way to encounter this very glam image. It certainly added to the drama.

  26. I believe you and I have the same housekeeper - I shall have to fire her too!

I do love when you play with your makeup, especially when you end up with phenomenally huge eyes like this. Cool little acorn hat - suits you, too bad about the itch factor.

  27. What a hat! yes, I think it's a hershey's kiss hat, but much tastier - your wings are amazing! I had to give up, the only one-eye wing wasn't as charming as I wanted - bugs in lights are grim, I'm accomplished in not looking, I didn't know about dodgy bugs though x x x

  28. please add either a stem and a leaf or a little paper banner to the top of that hat. Ok thanks. Bye.
